Aug. 22, 2015 Airman Spencer Stone and his friends, who first met at Freedom Christian school in California, were on a European vacation, traveling on a train towards Paris. A commotion woke him up. They were alerted that a terrorist had shot a passenger in another car. Stone sprung into action after his friend, Army National Guard Specialist Aleksander "Alek" Skarlatos, told him "Lets go." Stone reacted immediately. He ran towards the assailant, 30 feet away, and took the AK-47 out of the would be mass murders hands. But the assailant fought and kept pulling out weapons, including a hand gun and a box -cutter, cutting Spencer Stones neck and severing the tendon in one of his thumbs. His two other friends and a British passenger arrived soon after and they subdued the terrorist. Then Stone tried to stem the gun shot wound in the neck of a passenger, also an American, who was the first to confront the terrorist. There was too much blood for a t-shirt, so Stone used his fingers to apply pressure to the first responder, all the while, he himself was bleeding. We are so proud of this young airman, this brave American and his friends. His valor was appreciated by the French, who awarded him a medal of valor and the US Air Force will be nominating him for the Airmans Medal, the services highest award for non-combat bravery. Todd Beamer was a passenger of United Airlines 93 who led others against the terrorists who had commandeered the plane. Before he and others broke into the cockpit where the terrorist had taken control, he was heard reciting the Lords prayer and, the 23 psalms. Other passengers soon joined in. When it was time, he asked his supervisor, who was on the phone with him, to tell his family that he loved them. His was heard saying to his fellow passengers, "Lets roll." The recording that was recovered has the voices of the passengers breaking into the cockpit and trying to overwhelm the hijackers. The plane dove into a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. All souls were lost. It is assumed the averted the plane taking more lives at the intended destination Washington,DC. Todd Beamer is an American hero and is remembered for his bravery and leadership.
