Stone sprung into action after his friend, Army National Guard Specialist Aleksander "Alek" Skarlatos, told him "Lets go."
Stone reacted immediately. He ran towards the assailant, 30 feet away, and took the AK-47 out of the would be mass murders hands. But the assailant fought and kept pulling out weapons, including a hand gun and a box -cutter, cutting Spencer Stones neck and severing the tendon in one of his thumbs. His two other friends and a British passenger arrived soon after and they subdued the terrorist. Then Stone tried to stem the gun shot wound in the neck of a passenger, also an American, who was the first to confront the terrorist. There was too much blood for a t-shirt, so Stone used his fingers to apply pressure to the first responder, all the while, he himself was bleeding.
We are so proud of this young airman, this brave American and his friends. His valor was appreciated by the French, who awarded him a medal of valor and the US Air Force will be nominating him for the Airmans Medal, the services highest award for non-combat bravery.
